PSHCE
At Chessbrook we aim to provide pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum to prepare them for adult life. These areas are covered under the umbrella of Personal Social Health Education.
The aims of PSHE at Chessbrook are:
- To help pupils develop interpersonal, social and communication skills.
- To equip them to live a healthy life and take advantage of the opportunities open to them, both at work and during their leisure time.
- At every opportunity endeavour to raise pupil confidence and self esteem and develop responsibility.
Examples of the themes covered include financial capability, recreation and leisure, the media and awareness of pupils own and others moral, emotional and spiritual development. These themes are explored whilst developing the skills of written work, speaking and listening and independent research whilst following the AQA Entry level Certificate for PSHE.
Citizenship
Chessbrook recognises that citizenship forms an essential part in the development of a young person, encouraging them to fell they are valued members of our community whilst building respect for each other and a greater sense of personal responsibility.
The aims of Citizenship at Chessbrook are:
- To develop pupils’ self-confidence and decision-making skills.
- To enable them to enquire about differences, injustices, rights and responsibilities within their own and wider communities.
- To help pupils’ gain an appreciation of the necessary part they play within the community of our school and how this is reflected in the wider community.
- To enable them to learn about institutions, issues, problems and practices of our democracy.
- To enable pupils’ to re-integrate successfully into their next schools.
Citizenship lessons are delivered according to national Curriculum programmes of study at key Stages 3 and 4 according to the needs of individual pupils who stay at Chessbrook for varying amounts of time covering topics such as Law and Order, belonging to a community and debating a Global Issue. Care is taken to link the themes of citizenship with other polices at Chessbrook including Break-time, Anti-bullying, Equal Opportunities, Drugs, Racial equality and Offsite Activities.
