Key Stage 3 News
Last term H and C group trialled a new reading project. The aim was to promote reading, increase the use of the library and encourage students to become involved in its development, which we are keen to re-brand and re-launch. We spent the half-term reading Anthony Horowitz’s Stormbreaker, a story of the teenage spy Alex Rider, who tries to discover who is responsible for his Uncle’s death as well as stopping an arch villain from taking over the British technology and communications systems. Just a day in the life of an ordinary teenager then! We read the novel in several formats, including graphic novel and audio CD. At the end of the half term we then had a film afternoon where we ate popcorn and watched the film version of the novel. This was a great success and we aim to introduce a second novel in the summer term.
Key stage 3 students have also been studying poetry this term. I am hoping that we may be able to enter some of their best efforts for The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award. The competition deadline is the 31st July. So far I have been particularly inspired by Aaron Gaskin’s and Jack Thomson’s poems below, which were all about what they would keep in a magic box:
A Gaskin’s Magic Box
I will put in my box
Rays of sunshine beaming through my bedroom window
A feeling of happiness in the smile on my face
A good life for my family and friends
I will put in my box
Stars that shine like diamonds
The sound of silence
Snow as cold as my freezer
I will put in my box
A nudist beach filled with beautiful women
The smell of hot and spicy chicken wings
An orang-utan
My box is fashioned from baby blue clouds
It shouts out ‘Get out of my face’ every time the lid is lifted
At the back of my box is a doorway to heaven, with a pathway paved with soft pillows.
J Thomson’s Mysterious Box
I will put in my box
A lovely sunset as lovely as butterflies on a beautiful spring day
A sizzling BBQ
Red Robins singing
I will put in my box
A fifth season
Q.P.R lifting the F.A. cup
The rippling sound of the net as Q.P.R score a goal
I will out in my box
Rivers to fish in
M.O.S. music
And a little door leading to my house

Our year 11s have just reached the end of their time with us at Chessbrook and I will be very sad to see them go. They have worked really hard in the lead up to their exams and I wish them all the best of luck.
